Future Ready Engineering: Visual Transcript On screen: Student walking on campus wearing a Guelph Engineering jacket. To camera Rafeal Saltos, Mechanical Engineering Student. Rafeal VO: “I like to dissect a problem, understand the problem, and then create a plan of action to be able to attack that problem, and engineering's perfect for that.” On screen: Student walking on campus in front of Library. To camera Emma Sanderson, Environmental Engineering Student. Sitting in common area talking to another student. Emma VO: “Engineering appealed to me because it seemed like a good opportunity to apply the math and science skills that I really enjoyed but have it impact society.” On screen: Rafeal sitting in the atrium study space with three other students, working together. To camera in classroom space. Rafeal VO: “When I got here, I had no social skills at all. Like I was always wearing a hoodie, and I was always walking around very quiet, walking around the library, studying by myself. But now you'll see me studying in the engineering building, interacting with everybody. On screen: Professor lecturing to an Engineering class, Professor and three students working on solar panel. Emma VO: “There's a big push for diversity, inclusion, and equity in engineering. So, the person you think of when you think of an engineer is gonna look different. That means that we're incorporating more perspectives, and we're finding solutions that fit everybody. On screen: Rafeal is standing in a hallway talking with two other students. See a robotic arm picking up a small animal figurine, two students working the robotic arm, Rafeal to camera. Rafeal VO: “We are so interdisciplinary. Every program is able to interact with each other, and it's really inspiring because I know, once you go into the field, you're not just gonna be working with one discipline, you're gonna be working with a bunch of disciplines.” On screen: Classroom scene of students taking notes in lecture and listening. Emma is in a hallway with a friend setting up to do work. Emma to camera. Close up of 3D printer, two students working in a lab space. Emma VO: “Students take things like economics, history, and a bunch of complementary studies electives. I feel like I'm very well-rounded in the education I've received here, and it's better prepared me to enter the workforce. I'm the co-captain of a design club. I've gotten the chance to use different machinery, learn different tools. I've even got a welding certification now through the school of engineering. Which, who would've thought an environmental engineer would weld?” On screen: Professor and student working a big piece of equipment in engineering space, two professors and 3 students standing in an engineering lab space talking. Two scenes with students in robotics lab. Rafeal VO: “I have a class called Engineering Systems Design. And I was always questioning why I was learning the stuff I was learning in that class. I did my co-op in third year. I was like wait a second. This is all starting to click. Like these problem-solving skills are actually being applied to my job now.” On screen: A series of photos of students playing intramural sports, in the pool, floor hockey, flag football, Emma to camera. Professor talking to class, panning shot of students of listening. Emma VO: “I've had the opportunity to play several intramural sports. So to get to go and play sports with my friends, be a bit active, really helps my mental health and keeps me engaged in school. In engineering, all you hear is about how difficult it is and how daunting courses can be and how competitive it can be. Guelph puts a focus on community and compassion in their engineering program.” On screen: Rafeal walking with a friend and bicycle and talking. Drone shots of campus. Rafeal VO: “It's a collaborative, engaging, team-building place to come. I have a lot to thank to the University of Guelph just because of the fact that I've become this person for the next chapter of my life.”
