Academic Information | New International Students
Below, you will find valuable information and guidance to help you navigate the academic landscape at U of G.
We understand that adjusting to a new educational system can be challenging, and that's why we have compiled resources to support your academic success. From registering for courses to accessing academic support services, this section will equip you with the knowledge and tools necessary to thrive in your studies.
It is your responsibility to fully understand your course outline and complete your coursework before the deadlines. Stay organized and avoid procrastination. Do not complete your assignments at the last minute.
Undergraduate Student Information
The undergraduate academic calendar helps students stay on track in their degree program. It includes registration dates, class start dates, course add and drop dates, program policies, and more. Get familiar with this resource ahead of time to begin learning about your responsibilities as a university student.
WebAdvisor
After being accepted into your program, it is important to register for your courses for the next semester. Through a web-based program called WebAdvisor, students have access to services such as Course Registration, Class/Exam Schedules, Billing, Account Summary and Payments. You will also be able to view your Application Status and list of Required Documents. This is the fastest way to register for courses, seminars and labs.
You can now use the Student Planning Tool through WebAdvisor to check your program requirements, plan your degree, track your academic progress, and enrol in courses. Learn more about the tool on the Office of Registrarial Services website.
Registration Guide for New Undergraduate Students
Check out the Registration Guide for New Students for detailed instructions on how to register and choose courses using WebAdvisor.
Adding Courses | The process of registering for a course. | You may only add courses during the designated period (normally the first week of each semester). Consult your academic calendar for these dates. |
Dropping Courses | The process of ending/cancelling your registration in a course. | You may drop a course until the last day of the semester, as determined by the schedule of dates. If you drop a course before the deadline, then the dropped course will not appear on your academic transcript. |
Important Note
International students interested in applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWP) cannot be enrolled part-time or take unscheduled breaks. Please refer to the PGWP page on the IRCC website for more information.
If you are an international student transferring from another university, choosing courses will look a bit different. Credits known as “transfer credits” are granted to students coming from other post-secondary schools and represent courses already completed. The number of credits you have will determine what day you select your courses on in future semesters.
An academic advisor for your degree program can help in explaining what your transfer credits mean and how they may impact which courses to register for. Please refer to the list of Academic Advisors for their contact information. For more information and resources to help with course selection as a transfer student, visit the Mature and Transfer Student page (login required).
