Getting to Guelph | New International Students
This page contains information on what to expect as you plan to book flights, navigate the airport, and plan your transportation to arrive at U of G.
On this page:
Arriving in Canada
Both the Toronto (YYZ) and Hamilton (YHM) airports are approximately one hour away from Guelph, but most international flights land at Pearson International Airport in Toronto.
If you are planning to live off-campus, we suggest arriving early so that you have time to find housing and get settled before classes begin.
If you are booking a flight to return home for vacation during winter break, do not set the date until you know your final exam schedule.
Toronto-Pearson Airport Customs and Immigration
If arriving in Canada at Toronto-Pearson Airport, you may need to navigate customs and immigration. Visit our Toronto-Pearson Airport Customs and Immigration page (login required) for more details.
At the Port of Entry, you will also need to provide immigration documents. Visit our Immigration Document Checklist at the Port of Entry webpage (login required) for more details.
Transportation From the Airport
Below you will find details and cost estimates for a trip from the airport to Guelph. We encourage you to visit the websites linked under each mode of transport for the latest information.
The method of travel you choose may depend on, for example, whether you are travelling as a group, with multiple bags, or if you are travelling by yourself.
Private Transportation
For a more direct trip to the university or your final destination, you may use one of these services offered at the airport. Please be advised that these services are faster but much more expensive than using public transportation. Regardless of your method of travel, confirm your car and driver are those you requested prior to getting into a vehicle.
Red Car offers a direct shuttle from the airport to your doorstep in Guelph. If booking online, the minimum rate for a shared car is $105 (plus tax) and $156 (plus tax) for a private car. We strongly advise you to book online in advance to secure your transportation. Instead of a pick-up time, you can specify your flight information, and the shuttle services will make arrangements accordingly. Visit the Red Car website for more information and to book your trip. You can use booking code “UG student” to receive $15 off your first trip.
Uber is another popular option among students. While the rate from YYZ airport to Guelph varies, it is usually between $100 - $130. One perk of using Uber is that you can book a car via the mobile app when you are ready to leave the airport, and it will arrive within a few minutes. You need to download the mobile Uber app and link a credit card to your account prior to booking an Uber.
You may also book a private taxi to Guelph from the airport. These taxis offer a flat rate between $147 and $162 depending on the company. If you require an accessible vehicle, the estimated price for an accessible van capable of carrying a non-foldable mobility aid is $141. Please note that small foldable mobility aids can be carried in standard taxis at no extra cost as long as the item is able to fit into the car.
A credit card is usually needed to book these prior to your arrival. Please note that these are private companies that may charge for additional luggage. Tipping your driver is also usually expected. If you wish to use this service, you can do an online search for "Toronto Airport Taxis". It is also possible to book a taxi at Toronto Airport, at either Terminal 1 or 3 at Arrivals Level.
