December 6: National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
December 6 is a powerful and solemn day in Canada — the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. It marks the anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre in Montreal, where 14 women were tragically killed and others injured in an act of gender-based violence.
Also known as White Ribbon Day, this national observance honours the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the broader societal impacts of violence against women. It’s a moment not only for remembrance but also for a renewed call to action.
We wear white ribbons, observe moments of silence, and gather in vigils and memorials to pay tribute — but we also use this day to reflect on the work still needed to build a world free from gender-based violence. It's a time to raise awareness, support survivors, and recommit ourselves to creating safe, respectful, and inclusive spaces in our communities.
At the University of Guelph, we invite our community to join in honouring this day and in standing together to say: never again.

Ways to Honour the Victims of the December 6 Tragedy
Join us in remembering, reflecting, and standing against gender-based violence.
Wear a white ribbon – A symbol of remembrance and commitment to ending violence against women. Pick one up from the Guelph Engineering Society office near Adams Atrium in the days leading up to December 6.
Observe a moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. – Pause to reflect on the lives lost and the ongoing need for action.
Attend Engineering’s December 6 Memorial – Join our School of Engineering community in a meaningful remembrance ceremony.
Take part in a local vigil – Many communities host events to honour the victims and raise awareness.
Together, we remember. Together, we rise.
