Expanding Opportunities for High School Learners and Aspiring University Students

Posted on Wednesday, May 21, 2025

Preparing for university is about more than just meeting admission requirements – it’s about discovering passions, building confidence, and maximizing potential.

The School of Continuing Studies (SCS) is excited to offer two new opportunities to help students explore their full potential, Academic Upgrading and High School Enrichment. These opportunities expand our programming, providing high school learners and aspiring university students the chance to experience studies at the University of Guelph while working towards their goals.

Academic Upgrading (AU) helps students become more competitive or admissible in post-secondary applications. High school learners who have received a conditional offer of admission to the University of Guelph or another Ontario post-secondary institution can boost their high school grades by taking an equivalent course and earning university credit through the University of Guelph. Students can enroll in Effective Writing (ENGL*1030) to boost their ENG4U grade, or Introductory Chemistry (CHEM*1060) to enhance their SCH4U grade, with more courses coming in summer 2026.

The High School Enrichment (HSE) opportunity accelerates education and prepares learners for success by allowing them to complete credits they can apply to a post-secondary degree. Students in grade 12 and 12+ can enroll in a range of course and degree options available at the University of Guelphincluding finance, environmental and social justice studies, nutrition, and more. This opportunity provides the chance to explore a passion while getting ahead in school. Courses for HSE run year-round, with courses beginning in Fall 2025.

Both AU and HSE courses are offered in an online asynchronous format, allowing students to fit them into their schedule during spares, on the weekend, or whenever is most convenient. Whether students are looking to strengthen academic foundations, explore advanced subject matter, or gain early exposure to university life, the School of Continuing Studies is thrilled to provide these high school opportunities to help learners take a meaningful step toward a successful transition into university, and beyond.

Introductory Chemistry (CHEM*1060) begins Friday, June 27 and is currently open for registration.
