Interview with Maya Fields

Tell us about yourself and why you chose to study Bio-Medical Science at the University of Guelph?

My name is Maya Fields, I am currently a first-year medical student at McMaster University. I graduated from U of G in 2023 with a BSc in Biomedical Science. I chose to study Biomedical Science at the University of Guelph because I knew that the biomedical science program would expose me to various areas of science and health care that may be of interest to me in the future. I wanted a science program that had a health care focus, but was still general enough that I could be exposed to different topics that I may not have otherwise been able to learn.

What did you like most about your program? Is there anything in particular about the courses or professors that stands out to you?

I loved that the Biomedical Science program allowed me to explore my interests in a wide-range of biological topics. I got to take a diverse set of introductory courses, including biochemistry, immunology, epidemiology, pharmacology, pathology, nutrition, physiology, and more. This allowed me to explore areas of science that I wasn’t aware of and discover interests I wouldn’t have without the program. For example, I ended up loving epidemiology so much that I decided to complete a fourth-year thesis project in it! I also really appreciated how helpful all of my professors were. Whenever I would reach out for extra help, my professors were always supportive and understanding.

Where are you currently working and what is your role?

I am currently a first-year medical student at McMaster University.

How did your degree and time at the University of Guelph help get you to where you are today? How do the skills and education you gained help with your current work?

The knowledge I gained from my time at the University of Guelph was invaluable to getting me where I am now. The diversity of courses I took helped me establish a strong foundation upon which to continue my education in the field of medicine. I have yet to encounter a topic that I was not exposed to during my undergraduate degree! The research opportunities at the University of Guelph helped me develop my critical thinking skills and independent learning, which have been key to my success in my training so far.

What advice would you give someone considering the Bio-Medical Science program or applying to the University of Guelph?

Apply to Guelph! I absolutely loved my time at the University of Guelph. The school community is so positive and welcoming, the professors are knowledgeable and available to help whenever you need it! The curriculum was always engaging and is applicable to a wide range of health care fields, whether you hope to continue your studies in a master’s program, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, veterinary, etc. I truly loved learning at Guelph- the city, food, people, and program were all amazing, and I would do it again in a heartbeat!
