Interview with Lauren Yee
Tell us about yourself and why you chose to study Applied Human Nutrition
at the University of Guelph?
Food had always been a central part of my life, whether it was making gnocchi with my Nonna or making pancakes on the weekend with my parents, it was something that brought joy. Later in high school, I discovered the powerful role food plays in our health. Inspired by a fitness teacher who encouraged me to be strong and take care of my body, I realized I wanted to be that source of inspiration for others. That’s how I found my way to the field of dietetics! I chose to study Applied Human Nutrition at the University of Guelph for a few reasons. First, U of G offered an accredited program that could set me on the path to becoming a Registered Dietitian — a career I was hoping to pursue. And when I visited the campus, I instantly fell in love. It truly felt like home, and I could picture myself learning and growing there over the next four years.
What did you like most about your program? Is there anything in particular about the courses or professors that stands out to you?
I enjoyed the variety of courses we got to take in the program — everything from human physiology to psychology to restaurant management! It gave me a broad learning experience and helped me discover which areas of nutrition I was most passionate about. In the later years, I also really appreciated the smaller class sizes, which made for a more interactive and engaging learning environment where I could connect more with my professors.
Did you do co-op? If yes, tell us a bit about your co-op job and your experience.
I didn’t do co-op, but I did take a fourth-year course called Field Experience in Nutrition Education (NUTR*4850), and I would highly recommend it! It was a semester-long opportunity that allowed me to gain hands-on experience by shadowing the on-campus dietitian. There were so many valuable opportunities to get experience in different settings, which made it such a worthwhile part of my degree!
Where are you currently working and what is your role?
I am currently working as a Registered Dietitian for a medical weight management program. In this role, I work 1-1 with clients to help them make sustainable changes and build healthy habits to help them reach their health goals!
How did your degree and time at the University of Guelph help get you to where you are today? How do the skills and education you gained help with your current work?
My degree from the University of Guelph gave me the strong foundation I needed to become a dietitian. Courses like the nutrition fieldwork course provided me with that first hands-on experience to see what the day-to-day work is really like. Beyond academics, my involvement in extracurriculars — like the Student Nutrition Awareness Program — helped me build confidence and develop key skills that continue to serve me today. The foundational knowledge I gained, especially in those first couple of years, has been essential in my career, from understanding nutrient metabolism to human physiology.
What advice would you give someone considering the Applied Human Nutrition program or applying to the University of Guelph?
Do it! It’s such an amazing school with an incredible program. Also, if you’re considering the school - I highly recommend visiting the campus. When I visited, it truly felt like home, and I knew it was the right fit! Once you’re here, my best advice is to say yes — take advantage of every opportunity, whether it’s campus events, learning experiences, networking, or time spent with friends. It really does fly by! And if you’re thinking about residence, I’d suggest looking into an academic cluster. I lived in one in my first year, and it was such a great way to meet people in my program, study together, and feel supported right from the start.
